Calgary, Alberta – Since inception in 1974, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre (CTCC) has been an inseparable part of Calgary’s community and visitor economy. 2024 marks a milestone year as we commemorate our 50th anniversary as the first purpose-built convention centre in Canada. This pioneered the way for the Canadian convention industry by helping to define the market and set the stage for the opening of other convention centres across the country.

In honor of our anniversary, we are kicking off a year of celebrating with the unveiling of our 50th Anniversary Mural in our South Building on the main floor. Other events, such as the opening of a 50-year time capsule and media event will be held in June along with community activations over the summer on Stephen Ave. Most importantly, we will host an event in November to celebrate our dedicated employees who brought life to our walls and in turn have helped shape the events industry.

“Being the first purpose-built convention centre in Canada with an attached hotel and museum set the precedent for the rest of the country and 50 years later, we are still leaders in our industry,” says Kurby Court, President and CEO of the CTCC. “Celebrating 50 years not only speaks to what we have done for the Calgary community but to our incredible employees and talent that we have retained over this time. The CTCC would not be where we are today without the resilience and strength of our team members who are the backbone of our organization.”

As a mass assembly venue, the CTCC has hosted countless conferences, events, conversations that reflect the broader community and issues that are important to the citizens of Calgary. From hosting Prime Ministers, components of the 1988 Olympics, scientific conferences to a mass vaccination site and fundraising galas, the CTCC is proud to have served the Calgary community for a half century.

The 50-year wall consists of archived visuals and text to highlight the CTCC’s history, incredible event moments and impact on the Calgary community. The anniversary events throughout the year will reflect on the CTCC’s past while celebrating the next 50 years of building meaningful, enduring connections. In 1974 the centre started as a place of possibilities and will continue to be for the years to come.
